Nordic Walking

Now in it’s third year!

The Nordic Walking Programme, led by Communities First, is a three-year initiative designed to include under-represented groups in outdoor fitness and well-being activities. We collaborate with Age Concern, Age UK, Croydon Voluntary Action Group, and local refugee/asylum support organisations, ensuring that all participants—regardless of income, health, culture, ability, or access to equipment—can take part.

A Community-Focused Approach
Nordic Walking isn’t just about fitness; it’s about bringing people together. Young refugees and asylum seekers can build friendships, develop confidence, and practice language skills, creating a sense of belonging and safety in their new environment.

Accessible & Inclusive for All
With funding support from WCGL, our programme provides:
Free participation for all, removing financial barriers
Equipment provided to ensure inclusivity
Introductory open days to engage new participants
Special presentations for both older and younger community members, highlighting physical and mental health benefits
Structured Nordic Walking sessions, covering technique, posture, and breathing exercises for improved endurance and relaxation

Key Outcomes & Impact
Increased Physical Activity – Participants are incorporating more movement into their daily lives, leading to improved mobility, balance, and confidence, especially for older adults.

Stronger Social Connections – By engaging with people from different backgrounds, participants have built a supportive and inclusive community.

Greater Health Awareness – Many now understand the cardiovascular, muscular, and mental well-being benefits of Nordic walking, making fitness a sustainable part of their lifestyle.

As we continue into our third year, we look forward to expanding the programme and ensuring more people benefit from the power of movement, connection, and community engagement.
